Why Patrick Bateman Is A Great Character

There is no other character that I can think of that is quite like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho. Originally from the book "American Psycho" by Bret Easton Ellis, Patrick Bateman is not your typical Wall Street worker. Patrick's activities include working out, renting videos, going out to eat at fancy high class restaurants (except for Dorsia), working, and brutally slaughtering people. Who would figure that a man who works on wall street is so bored with his life of excess that he has to kill people to be happy? This is part of the reasons why Patrick is an interesting character. Another thing is that no one catches on, no one even cares. People confuse Patrick with other people and he just goes along with it and acts as if he is these other people. He is a mixture of Gordon Gekko and Ted Bundy. This why he is a great character. He is not ordinary. He does more than what his stereotype would make it seem like he does. Because of this, he is a great character. On Empire's list of 100 greatest characters, no one is like him. Sure, there are killers and greedy individuals but no one is quite as sinister as he is. The way Christian Bale portrayed him is another reason why he is a great character. He was sarcastic, intelligent, suave, and demented. He portrayed him in a way other people considered for the role cannot. These people are Leonardo Dicaprio, Edward Norton, and Brad Pitt. I do not think any of them could have done the role quite like Bale. That is why I think his portrayal added to the greatest of the character. Patrick Bateman is just an original creation. He has everything I feel makes a great character.
